UPDATE MAY 14: Wow yegSpark, you are amazing! YEG Seniors Project offered two pick-up days and you blazed through their supply of mugs. The Baskets of Love are going to be beautiful!
Seniors are at particular risk of loneliness and isolation, and the pandemic has made their situations worse.
That’s how the YEG Seniors Project came about. Meera Kassam wanted to raise awareness about the challenges seniors face and to organize ways to support them. Her group has done drive-by parades at a retirement home and collected more than 3,000 handmade cards for residents in long-term care.
Now, with a Young Edmonton Grant from the Edmonton Community Foundation and support from Edmonton Meals on Wheels, YSP is assembling 350 Baskets of Love filled with food, toiletries and other items for seniors, to bring joy and promote wellness. And they want yegSpark members to help, by decorating ceramic mugs to add to the baskets.
You’ll need acrylic paints, paint pens or oil-based permanent markers, and a way to pick up and drop off the mugs on this schedule:
- Thursday, May 13, early evening, University of Alberta area
- Friday, May 14, mid-afternoon, Terwillegar area
- Thursday, May 20, early evening, University of Alberta area
- Friday, May 21, early afternoon, Terwillegar area
- Saturday, June 5, early afternoon, Terwillegar area. Final drop-off. No pick-ups.
Click on the red button to sign up and YEG Seniors Project will send you the exact times and locations for pick up and drop off; step-by-step instructions; recommended supplies and where to get them; and some design ideas. If you haven’t already, you’ll need to register for yegSpark first. It’s free; there’s no obligation; and we’ll notify you when we add new service opportunities.
